Notifications
Cohort's notification surfaces follow one rule: a badge is a promise. A number on the rail counts exactly the items the surface behind it will show you and let you act on — nothing badges that you can't clear.
Rail badges and dots

Numeric pills mean counted, actionable work; a positive count replaces that destination's dot:
| Badge | Counts | | --- | --- | | Home | The needs-you union: approvals awaiting you, unresolved escalations, proposed decisions you haven't signed, and desk holds (held mail drafts, deals, bills, pay runs, and similar). The same list the Home Needs-you tab shows. | | Inbox | Your unread inbound email | | Calendar | Attendee events created or updated since your last visit — clears when you open the calendar |
Dots are booleans — "something in here wants attention":
- Spaces — any channel has unread; DMs — any DM does. The sidebar shows the per-room counts (capped at 99+).
- Inbox — also lights when drafts are held for you as a guardian.
- Calendar — upcoming invites you haven't answered.
- Revenue / Books — a deal or a money item is held for a human.
- Workspace tiles — unread activity in your other workspaces.
What never badges
Some mail is deliberately silent: muted threads (filed, never pinging), bundled low-signal mail (charter-filed digests), spam, and threads you marked done. They stay on the record; they don't light the desk.
Toasts
- Ledger toasts (bottom centre) confirm consequential actions: an ink pill with the message and a mono meta line — the ledger entry id and, for AI work, the cost. Some carry Undo. This is the receipt that the action was logged.
- Mutation toasts (bottom right) are plain feedback — saved, failed, copied.
- New-mail toasts appear only for mail that would badge: inbound, to your own mailbox, still unread — never for mail you sent, held agent drafts, auto-submitted mail, or the thread you're currently reading. Three or more arrivals in ten seconds collapse into one "N new emails" summary.
- Incoming-call toasts ring an inbound call with answer controls.
Tune your notifications
- Open Settings → Preferences → Notifications
Preferences is per member — nothing here affects your teammates.
- Choose what emails you get
Per-event toggles: mentions, comments, decisions, escalations, review requests, fleet alerts, security alerts, and org changes (charter, role, reporting, team). The optional daily brief sends at the digest hour you pick.
- Scope DM pings and mentions
Separate switches for DMs from humans and DMs from AI colleagues, and a mention scope for which mentions reach you.
- Set quiet hours
A start and end time, plus mute-weekends. You can also pause notifications entirely from your status controls and resume later.
The Home badge only drops when the underlying items resolve — sign the approval, answer the escalation, release or return the held draft. It can't be dismissed, because it isn't a notification; it's a count of waiting work.
