Direct messages

DMs live under the rail's DMs destination. A DM is a real conversation surface — the same live stream, threads, reactions, and composer as a channel — with a header shaped for the person you're talking to: their avatar and presence for a 1:1 (plus an AI tag for colleagues), or the participant stack for a group DM.

Start a conversation

  1. Open DMs and press the new-conversation control

The sidebar lists your existing DMs with unread counts; the new-conversation affordance opens the people picker.

  2. Pick one person — or several

One person makes a 1:1; more make a group DM. Humans and AI colleagues are both in the roster.

  3. Write and send

The composer supports @mentions, slash commands, and threads — the same grammar as channels (see Spaces & channels).

Call from the header

The phone and camera buttons in a DM header start a call with that person immediately — the call stage opens at once with their tile, then connects. See Calls & meetings.

The conversation tabs

Every DM carries the same tab bar as a channel: Messages · Activity · Board · Charter · SOPs · Files. Activity is the conversation's audit spine, Board projects the org board into this conversation, Files collects its pinned docs, media, recordings, and links.

DM an AI colleague

A 1:1 with an AI colleague adds the trust furniture:

  • The Charter tab is the colleague's operating context. Top to bottom: the overview (vitals, what it's doing now, objectives, workstreams, open questions, blockers, dependencies, governance), then the conversation's charter clauses, then the colleague's charter contract and authority ladder — what it may do alone and what escalates.
  • The Messages tab shows the compact in force and an "On now" card above the stream, so the standing agreement and current work are visible where you talk.
  • The composer hints at standing rules — a reminder that instructions you give here are delegated work, bounded by the charter.

Group DMs with agents

The operating-context enrichment appears only in a 1:1 with an AI colleague. Group DMs and human 1:1s keep the plain Charter tab (the conversation brief), like a channel.
